Time to say goodbye

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Dolphjn was lifted from the water on Monday which was a bit of a stark reminder that the season is coming to an end. Dawn and Richard moved themselves into an air conditioned apartment (guess where I’ve vbeen hangin out?) and began to do the final work to leave the boat on the hard for the next few months before they resume their journey through the Panama next year.
It was a bit of reminder that perhaps we should start the packig up chores early if we are to be ready to come home.

Decided that as this was to be our last Friday night together the 6 of us would have another BBQ night at the marina. So not having learned anything from the previous week we were back for more dancing and rum punch. It was a lot of fun though and it didn’t rain this week.

During the course of that evening we found some buddies to travel to Trinidad with and hope to move later this week. This depends on the tropical wave going through in the next couple of days. The wreckage from the Venezuelan gas rig that sank should be well clear of the passage route and hopefully the trip will be safe and speedy.
To get ready for the trip John decided that the bottom of the boat needed to be scraped. So we lifted the anchor from Prickly Bay and headed back to Dragon Bay where the water is so much clearer and thus we would be able to see what we were scraping of. With hindsight that was maybe not the case. Thye bottom of the hull was covered in weed asnd slime. We had everything from oyster, barnacles, long weed , short weed, and masses of sea lice. On top of that we had to deal with lots of little jelly fish that were stinging. In the end we gave up after a couple of hours. We had managed to one side and the fish were feasting on all that had come of. Dancing Walrus were with us and they had the same problems. The increase in water temperature has really enhanced the growth and in bays like Prickly where there isn’t a lot of tidal movement the growth is even fiercer.

We opted to stay the night in Dragon as it was very peaceful (leastways till the partying started!) Eventually the music stopped about 4 a.m. and for yet another night we fell asleep to a Bob Marley classic. Next morning we got up early and into the calm water to finish the other side of the hull. Once again a lot of lice but the port side wasn’t nearly as heavily weeded as the starboard had been and the job was done in a couple of hours.

Then it was time to pop across to St George’s. We had a great sail over just under jib and doing 6.5 knots. John reckoned it was just because she had a clean bum!! Anyway we dropped anchor beside a beautiful beach and went ashore to meet up with Dawn and Richard who were leaving on the night flight.
We went to the Aquarium for lunch and had a lovely time. Sad to see them go even though we will all meet up in UK soon as it reminded us that we will soon also say goodbye to Dancing Walrus. Anyway we just had a great day and there was yet another live band so we even managed a bit more dancing.

Today we are in at Port Louis marina once more in order to fill both water and fuel tanks. Tomorrow a.m. we shall get the provisioning done as well. Later we go back to Prickly Bay to have one last night of music and dance with Dancing Walrus and a few others as a farewell to Grenada.

Must admit it would have been lovely to have spent the hurricane season here. It feels safe and everyone is so welcoming and polite. However a new island awaits – Trinidad here we come.
